FAQ: Computer Donations

inquiries about computer donations should be directed to Rex Dwyer at [email protected].

What kinds of equipment are needed?

At present, working laptops, no more than 6 years old, are preferred.  Power supplies are a necessity.  Mice are appreciated.
In the future, we hope to develop a capability to repair and refurbish computers in Guatemala.

What about the company data on the drives?

Unfortunately, donors must be responsible for scrubbing drives.   A number of programs will scrub drives to meet Department of Defense standards, which to the best of our knowledge satisfy HIPAA, FERPA, FINRA, and other regulations.  Donors who feel skittish about data security may consider removing drives and making a cash donation of $40 for the purchase and installation of a used drive.  Alternatively,  the Kramden Institute, a great organization serving local nonprofits, has a secure facility for wiping donated disk drives.

Is there a minimum donation?

Within the RTP area, a donation of 10 is appreciated.  Please contact Rex Dwyer regarding donations beyond RTP.

What software is expected?

No software needs to be installed.  Chaptops will install Windows in a Spanish-language configuration.

How does my business benefit?

Besides the obvious satisfaction of having helped the less fortunate, Chaptops will cooperate with you on social media posts and provide photos and background information on recipients.  Chaptops hopes to have the participation of local Hispanic-owned businesses as shipping sponsors, so a computer donation is a way to partner with the local Hispanic community as well as the recipients in Guatemala.
